Quarterly Update March '22

LHTP winter session has been running smoothly, as COVID mandates have been lifted even more. Our students have been keeping a good rhythm of studying, completing homework assignments, and improving in all of their school subjects. Our LHTP Directing Staff have been busy observing and coach training some of our newer staff members. They quickly picked up the skills needed to be strong tutors. We’re motivating and encouraging our students for the final months of this school year to push through and to excel!!!

Our JYC & YUCA youth clubs had a few community service events this quarter. We had the opportunity to help assemble thousands of goodie bags to be mailed out to the LA Firecracker Virtual Race participants. Our Youth club members helped twice this year with the LA Marathon water station, in November & March. We saw many familiar faces of our JYC & YUCA friends and alum in the crowd, who were running the race. We were able to take our JYC leaders for their one day retreat. We kept it local this year, in Alhambra. It was a great way to bond some more as we wrap up their year together. Many of our seniors have been applying for Scholarships and eagerly awaiting to hear from the Colleges about acceptances.

Upcoming for JYC, YUCA, & “IP” is celebrating API Heritage Month, Cabinet & Leadership team elections & banquets, possibly a college tour (depending on COVID), and our “Increase the Peace” Green Space Challenge.

LHTP February Newsletter

LHTP has seen an influx of referrals from our local schools for students who have been struggling with their academics. We've been able to enroll the students immediately and get them the assistance they need. There have been a variety of ways our students have shown progress in a matter of months of attending LHTP’s hybrid tutoring sessions. We’ve had students who were failing some of their classes be able to finish and turn in missing assignments, some are bringing up their grades, other students are learning to read, we have a PPK student learning the English language to prepare to enter into school, and all of our students are learning to have better study habits and routines. LHTP is working hard to help parents identify areas of concern and find the solutions to fill in the areas of decline, voids, and gaps for their children to ensure academic success for all of the students we serve.

This month, we celebrated the Lunar New Year - “Year of the Tiger” with food and fun with our JYC & YUCA youth club members, who have been meeting on a regular basis after school in the hybrid format. A small group of our members helped to volunteer for the Firecracker Goodie Bag Assembly day to prepare for the Virtual Race.

Upcoming events for our members will be the LA Marathon volunteering and our Leadership Team Processing and Elections for the next school year. Also, we have a career workshop scheduled, in March. Along, with many of our seniors anxiously awaiting to hear news of acceptances from the colleges and universities.

Quarterly Update December '21

LHTP had a busy and fun filled Fall session. Our students have been studying hard and keeping their grades up in school. Everyone has stayed focused and on top of their homework. Our parents have been very pleased and excited to bring their children to site each week and can see the huge difference that our in-person classes and homework assistance has had on their child’s development and learning. We have also been able to continue to serve our parents who have work schedule conflicts with our Zoom Tutoring sessions for their children.

Our tutoring program was able to celebrate the October and November holidays with some fun arts & crafts in the classrooms. We closed out LHTP’s Fall session with a party, and Citizens Church LA’s Pastor and staff joined and generously donated toys and pizza for the entire program.

Our JYC and YUCA youth club members have really enjoyed, not only having their in-person general meetings, but especially being able to participate in so many community service events this quarter. Everyone has missed volunteering and being together. You can see the excitement and happiness in everyone’s faces. We have seen a huge turn out with our members volunteering and it started in October with the “Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk”, in Grand Park. It was great to be part of such an important fight and cause. Next, it was an early four o’clock in the morning meet up time, as we hurried through the city to get to the LA Marathon. Members helped to set up all the water cups for the thousands of runners. It was nice to walk through the closed streets of Downtown LA and see the sunrise. The runners came by fast, and we could barely keep up with the water cups. It was a super fun event!!!

JYC and YUCA members joined in the holiday festivities and volunteered with the HYC Toy Prep and Giveaway, in Boyle Heights. Our members helped to sort over 3,000 donated toys the night before the event, and a separate group of our members were there on event day to help distribute the toys to the kids. It was a great way to bring holiday cheer to the children. Meanwhile, Lincoln Heights had our annual Parade & Festival. Our JYC & YUCA volunteers helped with set up, ran the Santa Tent, Snow Slide, Arts & Crafts booth, and clean up for the festival area. The event was a great way to show our pride in Lincoln Heights. We took volunteers to Irwindale to help decorate the floats for the Rose Parade. It was a full day of cutting flowers, and a few of our students helped on the actual floats. We finished our year, with early Christmas parties and White Elephant gift exchange.
